QUICK READS: Spurs sack Pochettino, Mourinho hired as replacement

Tottenham Hotspur parted ways with Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino after more than five years at the club, with chairman Daniel Levy making it clear the departure was a sacking rather than a parting of ways through mutual consent.

Despite the indifferent start to the season for Spurs, it still came as quite a shock for the 47-year-old to be sacked – coming just six months after Pochettino lead Spurs to their first Champions League final, losing to Liverpool in Madrid.

QUICK READS: Women’s Super League smashes attendance records

After four of the six Women’s Super League games taking place this weekend were played at the larger men’s Premier League and Championship football stadiums of their respective sides – taking advantage of the ongoing international break – the league confirmed it smashed a number of attendance records.

More than 70,000 people turned out across the country to watch the women’s football matches, including a record 38,262 supporters at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to watch Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over north London rivals Spurs.

England’s performance against Kosovo was enough to win in the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina, but it was hardly a classic Three Lions performance as the spirited home side came out to demonstrate their clear abilities on the ball.

English football seems to be seeing an increasing exodus of its young stars abroad to further their development. While experiencing a range of footballing styles and cultures isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the country and its next generation, some of the reasons for the move abroad comes down the fundamental development opportunities here in England.

Opportunities for regular starting berths, especially at the top sides where the best young players are found, seem increasingly sparse at most clubs given the Premier League’s financial might and attraction to established senior players.

Xavier Amaechi is an exciting English winger and one of the latest wave of young English stars to have moved overseas – largely to Germany – in the hope of furthering their development in a different, potentially more accessible environment.

An England youth international, Amaechi was part of the team of the tournament when he played for England’s under17s national team in the 2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, scoring in the quarter final against Norway.
