Maintaining momentum: After a highly successful Women’s World Cup, and the Women’s Super League, now is the best time for the sport

Women’s football has been on a steady, upwards climb in popularity for a number of years now, but recently success with the 2019 Women’s World Cup and large stadiums attendances at the beginning of the current Women’s Super League season show that the momentum is really with the women’s game right now. It’s just a matter of making sure those in control of the game seize the opportunity they now have.

As interest in the women’s game grows, it is necessary that organisations involved come together to ensure that in this most crucial of steps it is supported to reach the next step. The foundations have been built, the business case of sorts for the game itself proven clearly – there is an audience out there, hungry for the sport – and now it just needs the necessary backing.

Xavier Amaechi is an exciting English winger and one of the latest wave of young English stars to have moved overseas – largely to Germany – in the hope of furthering their development in a different, potentially more accessible environment.

An England youth international, Amaechi was part of the team of the tournament when he played for England’s under17s national team in the 2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, scoring in the quarter final against Norway.

Norway 3-0 Nigeria; Impressive first half display sees Norway through to victory

A flurry of first half goals proved enough for Norway to run out impressive winners in their opening match of the 2019 Women’s World Cup in Reims after a flurry of first half goals.

Guro Reiten and Lisa-Marie Utland both got their names on the scoresheet before Osinachi Ohale put through her own net all in the first half.

The second half started on a sour note after a serious injury to Nigerian defender Faith Michael, who after a lengthy delay was stretchered off the pitch.
