Standing Together: Racism in Dutch football

Racism continues to occur with unacceptable regularity on the terraces around Europe and beyond, but after an incident in Dutch football the country’s top two leagues are taking a stand.

Ahmad Mendes Moreira, who is a black Dutch-born professional football currently playing for second division side Excelsior in the Netherlands, was subjected to racial abuse from the early minutes of his side’s clash with Den Bosch.

Legacy of Catenaccio: Leaving a permanent influence on the game

Catenaccio. It’s a word wellknown among the ranks of Italian football and hardcore followers of the beautiful game, but has largely been left behind as football evolved and grew. Yet, the hyper-defensive tactical style has left a legacy on the sport which cannot be simply ignored or overlooked.

Ultra-defensive sides these days are so often bemoaned by supporters and pundits alike, but they serve their purpose. Earning a result over all other factors is sometimes a necessary evil for sides to undertake, especially against difficulty opponents, and much of this legacy can be found back in the success that Catenaccio football had in Italy in the 1960s and early 1970s.

The 17-year-old Dutchman joined Liverpool in 2018 from Ajax, after four years at the Amsterdam club. Originally, Hoever started out in the youth ranks of AZ Alkmaar.

From minute one in Guimaraes, in front of a crowd predominantly sporting the St George’s cross, England were outplayed by their Dutch counterparts. Those donned in orange shirts dominated the ball and bossed the midfield, but it was ultimately costly mistakes that became England’s own undoing in Portugal.

England have become allergic to appearing in finals of international competitions, and once again it looked like it could be against Gareth Southgate’s side.
