FTB: Why it is now imperative Mike Ashley departs Newcastle as soon as possible

Mike Ashley is the epitome of the Premier League’s ‘devil you know’. Everyone and their mother, irrespective of which club you support, knows of the Sports Direct magnate’s reign at the helm of St. James’ Park and the turmoil which has ensued alongside it.

Times have been tough on Tyneside plenty before, but under Steve Bruce the Magpies finally seem broken beyond immediate repair. On the pitch, those in black and white look lost and with no chance of finding clarity wherever they look, while off the field there is little to be excited about for supporters.

FTB: Why latest Newcastle United takeover saga offers little to be excited about

The prospect of Newcastle United being taken over by new ownership and finally expelling Mike Ashley from St. James’ Park is a thought that excites any Magpies supporter. Yet, news of a new potential takeover involving familiar face Peter Kenyon and American outfit GACP Sports offers little to excite the Geordie faithful.

The reason for that is the emergence of this supposed fresh interest is almost laughably formulaic and predictable in its timing. Every year for the past three seasons now, a new takeover seems to emerge around the beginnings of October.

Was there any logic to be found in Rio Ferdinand’s bizarre pro-Mike Ashley rant?

No. That would be the initial answer, for certain. It just struck me as one of those comments ex-footballer pundits throw out there from time to time, despite not knowing the ins and outs of what they’re talking about, purely intent on stirring up some reaction and a spot in the headlines the next day.

Well, if that was his intention, then Rio Ferdinand certainly succeeded. He got a clear rise of out Newcastle supporters – understandably wound-up by a frankly ridiculous and misinformed statement – and he firmly planted his face in the sports headlines of the following day.

Newcastle United takeover: Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t

It’s fair to say Mike Ashley’s time owning Newcastle United has been somewhat turbulent. Fan discontent is at an all-time high, and there seems now to be an unbridgeable gap between the club’s fan base and its want-away financier.

That has created a situation whereby fans are stuck eagerly awaiting the day that news arrives saying Ashley has sold the club and permanently departed Tyneside. For many it’ll be a day of rejoice.
