Now we are several weeks into the season, supporters of almost every Premier League side have now experienced the almighty power of the video assistant referee (VAR) system and it’s penchant for disallowing marginal goals.

Offsides are quickly becoming the bane of forwards up and down the country, while the backwards handball rules involved with VAR continue to lurk in the shadows, rearing their head to snap away lastsecond winners and supporters’ euphoria with callous indifference.

Mike Ashley is the epitome of the Premier League’s ‘devil you know’. Everyone and their mother, irrespective of which club you support, knows of the Sports Direct magnate’s reign at the helm of St. James’ Park and the turmoil which has ensued alongside it.

Times have been tough on Tyneside plenty before, but under Steve Bruce the Magpies finally seem broken beyond immediate repair. On the pitch, those in black and white look lost and with no chance of finding clarity wherever they look, while off the field there is little to be excited about for supporters.

Steve Bruce refused to admit postgame that his side threw in the towel, but admitted there was a surrender of sorts to opponents Leicester. The Magpies lacked any creativity or attacking intent throughout the match, while at the back they remained all at sea.

Former Celtic, Barcelona and Sweden striker Henrik Larsson is reportedly one of the five possible candidates in discussions with League One side Southend United to become the next Seasiders boss.

The 48-year-old former Sweden international has been spotted at the last two Southend matches, while chairman Ron Martin has said he is going to Stockholm to “meet potential backroom staff’ ahead of the new managerial appointment.

Nearly 10 months after the tragic loss of Argentine striker Emiliano Sala in a plane crash, as he travelled back to the UK to join up with new club Cardiff City, FIFA has finally put to rest the financial squabbling between his former side Nantes and new club Cardiff City.

The then-Premier League club had signed the 28-year-old in the January transfer window in a £15m deal but the player passed away before he could ever feature for the club.
