Off the Continent: The curious case of Ceuta and Melilla

Spain is one of the hallowed, iconic footballing homelands in Europe, with La Liga firmly position as one of the continent’s big five leagues and its most dominant sides such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona having a worldwide fan base and recognition. European football is intrinsically linked with Spain.

As such, it is fascinating to discover that not too far down the Spanish footballing pyramid you can find two professional football sides not even based on the continent.

FTB: Why latest Newcastle United takeover saga offers little to be excited about

The prospect of Newcastle United being taken over by new ownership and finally expelling Mike Ashley from St. James’ Park is a thought that excites any Magpies supporter. Yet, news of a new potential takeover involving familiar face Peter Kenyon and American outfit GACP Sports offers little to excite the Geordie faithful.

The reason for that is the emergence of this supposed fresh interest is almost laughably formulaic and predictable in its timing. Every year for the past three seasons now, a new takeover seems to emerge around the beginnings of October.

Carles Puyol rejects offer of sports director role at Barcelona

Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has reportedly turned down an offer to become sports director after being approached by the Spanish champions.

The 41-year-old former centre back retired as a player in 2014, and shortly after took up a short spell as assistant to then sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

Brescia handed partial stadium closure for pjanic racial abuse

Brescia have found themselves the latest Italian football side to be embroiled in a racism scandal involving their fans, with the newly-promoted Serie A side being handed a partial stadium closure order as punishment for racial abuse aimed at Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanic.

The Bosnian international suffered the abuse from Brescia supporters after scoring the winning goal in Juventus’ 2-1 victory over the side. Pjanic was targeted with chants of a phrase which translated to “gypsy” in English.
