Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has reportedly turned down an offer to become sports director after being approached by the Spanish champions.
The 41-year-old former centre back retired as a player in 2014, and shortly after took up a short spell as assistant to then sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.
Puyol left that role in January 2015, and had reportedly been approached by the Catalan club about rejoining the administrative roster of the side – with Pep Segura having left his position of general manager in the summer.
Former teammates of Puyol’s, Eric Abidal and Patrick Kluivert, already work for Barcelona as part of the Spanish giants’ sporting department and utilising the talents of former players is a tact the Catalan club enjoys.
However, Puyol has opted against a return to the Camp Nou.
Tweeting about the offer, the former Spanish international responded to rejecting the offer by saying: “After weighing a lot, I have decided not to accept the club’s offer.
“It has not been an easy decision, but several personal projects in which I am immersed [mean] I would be prevented at this time from giving you the dedication that the position deserves.”
