The Football Association is set to investigate a tweet posted by Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva widely condemned as racist on social media.
The controversial tweet appeared to be in reference to his teammate Benjamin Mendy and was deleted later the same day.
Silva posted a photo believed to be Mendy as a child, alongside an offensive image of the logo for Spanish confectionery company Conguitos with the caption: “Guess who?”
In a statement on the issue, the FA said it was aware of the post. Should the game’s governing body decide to investigate further, it could well leave Silva facing either a fine or a ban.
The Portuguese international scored a hat-trick in Manchester City’s most recent match, when they smashed Watford 8-0 at the Etihad.
Mendy and Silva are close friends, having played with each other since 2016, first at Monaco and then at Manchester City from 2017. The French defender did not appear personally offended by the tweet.
However, football fans and charities alike have still called on Silva to see punishment. Anti-racism charity Kick It Out condemned the 25-year-old’s actions and called on the FA to act against Silva. The FA have also approached Bernardo Silva’s club over the incident.
