Irish Premier Division side Bohemians handed a league debut to 14-year-old forward Evan Ferguson during their 0-0 draw with Derry City, bringing the youngster on as a substitute in the closing minutes of the match.
Ferguson came on in the 90th minute of the match away at Brandywell Stadium, as Keith Long’s injury-ravaged Bohemians side battled to earn a point.
The 14-year-old is the son of Barry Ferguson, a former defender who played for Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers and Longford Town.
The young striker was born in October 2004, the same month that Lionel Messi made his professional debut for Barcelona. He had previously featured for Long’s Bohemians side in a 1-1 friendly draw with Chelsea in July.
Faced with a squad relatively thin on the ground through injury, Long’s intentions to set up his side for a point were clear from early in proceedings.
Throughout proceedings they frustrated opponents Derry City, as the Candystripes failed to break the deadline and therefore missed out on an opportunity to move third in the table.
David Parkhouse went closest for the hosts, while Luke Wade-Slater spurned Bohemians’ best opportunity of the contest.
