David de Gea has signed a new, longer contract with Manchester United, keeping the 28-year-old at Old Trafford through until 2023.

Since arriving in June 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson for £18.9m, de Gea has made 367 appearances for Manchester United.

Capped 40 times by Spain, de Gea has seen himself repeatedly linked with moves back to his home country with Real Madrid in recent transfer windows.

The 28-year-old was close to joining the Spanish giants back in September 2015 for £29m, only for the deal to collapse as the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time on deadline day.

De Gea had been in his final year of his contract and would have been able to talk with clubs outside England over a potential move in January. Negotiations over an improved contract between club representatives and de Gea have been ongoing for a long time, with Manchester United making an improved offer in July.

After signing the new deal, de Gea said: “Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.

“It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club.”

In his time at Old Trafford, the 28-year-old helped his side win the Premier League title in 2012/13, the FA Cup three seasons later and in the 2016/17 season both the League Cup and Europa League.

De Gea has played in all five of United’s Premier League games so far in 2019/20 with the club fourth, seven points behind leaders Liverpool.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “I am delighted that David has committed his long-term future to the club.”
