Newcastle are understood to be in negotiations over the signing of a new striker, believed to be Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro, in a record transfer deal for the club.
Sources close to Rafa Benitez have revealed the Spaniard is keen to complete at least two signings before the end of the transfer window, with one being a striker.
The sources did not reveal the club or player in question, but said the selling club would expect Newcastle to break their £16 million record transfer fee should negotiations be successful.
Reports have since alleged the transfer being negotiated is for Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro, who Newcastle have admired for some time.
Gameiro has struggled for game time at Atletico this season, and the arrival of Diego Costa could force him further down the pecking order – likely forcing the Frenchman to leave the club in search of regular game time.
Gameiro has scored six goals in 18 appearances, and he has previously netted fairly prolifically in Spain and France.
Gameiro scored 76 goals in 209 La Liga appearances over the course of his career, and has previously proven his quality at the highest competitive level.
If Newcastle were to sign Gameiro, he would bolster a Newcastle side that has struggled for goals this season – top scorer Joselu managing just four.
