Belgian top division side Royal Antwerp have announced the death of their 17-year-old player Joel Lobanzo, who had suffered a cardiac arrest during training on Tuesday.
The club said in a statement that Lobanzo had become unwell during an U19s training session and was treated by medical personnel, before being taken to hospital.
The player was reportedly in critical condition, with Royal Antwerp announcing his death on Thursday.
“We discovered this terrible news that Joel Lobanzo, a 17-year-old youth player from RAFC, died last night,” the club statement said.
“The young football player had become a victim of sudden cardiac arrest during the training of the U19 on Tuesday night.”
The club has offered support to players and staff affected by the tragedy.
