Typically when there are stories break about Jonjo Shelvey’s antics he’s the villain, though not this time as the midfielder broke his hand separating clashing teammates at Newcastle’s training ground.
Captain Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame took dislike to one another during a training session, and in a furious bust-up traded punches at the club’s Darsley Park training centre.
Jonjo Shelvey stepped in as peacemaker and was caught with several punches, fracturing a bone in his hand for his troubles.
The incident reportedly occurred when Lascelles repeatedly called Diame ‘lazy’ throughout the training session. Diame responded with an insult, and the pair began throwing punches at each other.
The club has confirmed the clash did occur during Thursday’s training session, but refused to comment further on the issue.
Shelvey is understood to have immediately went for treatment and will be monitored before the team’s clash at Southampton, though it is believed the injury will not rule him out of playing in the game if selected.
